OverviewWhat you needKonnect TV+ on Microsoft Hyper-VFrom the system image to the first TV — in six steps. Welcome to the installation of Konnect TV on Microsoft Hyper-V. In this video, we will set up the TV server completely — from the system image to the first TV. Step one: We get the system image from the customer account and check the file. Step two: Preparing the Hyper-V host. Step three: We set up the virtual switch for the TV network. Step four: We create the virtual machine and adjust the settings. Step five: We boot from the image and install the system. And step six: the first login to the console and the network checklist — especially multicast. Here is what you need before you get started. A Hyper-V host with Windows Server or Windows 11 Pro. A gigabit port in the TV network — and a second one only if the headend is in a different VLAN. SSD storage for the video-on-demand library. The network data: a static IP address with gateway and DNS in the TV network, the VLAN ID of the TV network, the multicast addresses of the headend, and the access data for the PMS — Opera on-premise or Opera Cloud. How large does the TV server need to be? That depends on the number of rooms, the channels, and the size of the movie library. We will confirm the final size during onboarding. Up to one hundred and fifty TVs: four virtual CPUs, sixteen gigabytes of RAM, and two hundred and fifty gigabytes of SSD. The typical hotel is at 'Medium': up to five hundred TVs, eight virtual CPUs, thirty-two gigabytes of RAM, and five hundred gigabytes of SSD. We are using these values in this video. Up to one thousand five hundred TVs: sixteen CPUs, sixty-four gigabytes of RAM, and one terabyte of NVMe. Here, we recommend a standby node. For anything above that or for multiple properties, we plan an enterprise setup with a high-availability pair. The key data for Hyper-V: Generation 2, Secure Boot off, static RAM, one gigabit port for the server, and SSD storage for video on demand.
Image & HostCheck download, enable Hyper-VThe image and the hostVerify file and turn on Hyper-V. You can find the system image on konnect-plus.com in your customer account under Konnect TV, in the 'Documents & downloads' list. Below that is your license with the 'Licence key' — you will enter this in the console after installation. Before you use the image, verify the file. In PowerShell auf dem Hyper-V-Host: Get-FileHash mit SHA256 berechnet die Prüfsumme, Get-Content zeigt den Sollwert aus der .sha256-Datei. Beide Werte müssen identisch sein — für das TV-Image heißt die Datei konnect-tv-v1.0.0.iso. Copy the ISO to a local hard drive on the host. Hyper-V cannot boot from a network share. If Hyper-V is not yet installed on the host, do it now. The host will restart once during this process. On Windows Server, 'Install-WindowsFeature Hyper-V' with the management tools is sufficient. On Windows 11 Pro, use 'Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature' for Microsoft-Hyper-V. In the BIOS or UEFI of the host, Intel VT-x or AMD-V and VT-d must be enabled. This is the Hyper-V Manager. On the left is the host, in the middle the virtual machines, and on the right the actions. In the 'Actions' pane on the right, you will find 'New' for a new virtual machine and the 'Virtual Switch Manager'. We will need both shortly.
Virtual SwitchServer, TVs, and headendA switch in the TV networkMulticast in, HTTPS out to the TVs. Konnect TV is in a managed LAN with the TVs and the headend. A virtual switch is sufficient. The headend converts satellite or cable into IP multicast. These streams must reach the server's VLAN. The 'TV-LAN' virtual switch is external and connected to a gigabit port. On the physical switch behind it: IGMP snooping with an active IGMP querier in the TV VLAN. The VM gets a static IP in the TV network. It delivers channels, movies, PMS data, and the admin console. The TVs — Samsung, LG, or Android boxes — are in the same TV VLAN and communicate with the server via HTTPS. Open the 'Virtual Switch Manager' in the Hyper-V Manager. 'New virtual network switch' is already selected on the left. Three types: 'External', 'Internal', and 'Private'. For Konnect TV, the switch needs the 'External' type because it is connected to the physical network card. Select 'External' and click on 'Create Virtual Switch'. Enter 'TV-LAN' as the 'Name'. Under 'External network', select the gigabit port connected to the TV network. Leave the 'Allow management operating system to share this network adapter' checkbox checked if the host is managed via the same card — otherwise, uncheck it. Click 'Apply' to create the switch. The host's network connection will drop for a few seconds — this is normal.
Virtual machineThe wizard, page by pageCreating the VMName, generation, memory, network, hard disk, and image. Now for the virtual machine. Right-click on 'New' and then on 'Virtual Machine…'. The 'New Virtual Machine Wizard' begins with the 'Before You Begin' page. Click on 'Next'. 'Specify Name and Location' page: Name the VM KONNECT-TV. Check the box for 'Store the virtual machine in a different location' and select an SSD drive with enough space, for example D:\Hyper-V. 'Specify Generation' page: Select 'Generation 2'. This choice cannot be changed later. 'Assign Memory' page: Enter 32768 megabytes for 'Startup memory' — thirty-two gigabytes for the Medium tier. Uncheck 'Use Dynamic Memory for this virtual machine'. A streaming server needs fixed memory. 'Configure Networking' page: Select the TV-LAN switch for 'Connection'. 'Connect Virtual Hard Disk' page: 'Create a virtual hard disk', size 500 gigabytes, on SSD. It grows dynamically with the movie library. 'Installation Options' page: 'Install an operating system from a bootable image file' and for 'Image file' the path to the Konnect TV image. The summary shows all values again: Name, Generation 2, 32768 MB, TV-LAN network, and the hard drive. Click 'Finish' to create the VM.
SettingsSecure Boot, CPU, VLANThe settings that matterEverything else remains at the Hyper-V default values. Before we start, let's adjust the VM settings. Generation 2 with UEFI — and Secure Boot disabled. Thirty-two gigabytes of static RAM. Eight virtual processors — reserved on a shared host. Five hundred gigabyte VHDX on SSD for the movie library. The network adapter on the 'TV-LAN' switch at a gigabit port, with the VLAN ID of the TV network in access mode and a static IP — the TVs point to this address. A second adapter is only needed if the headend multicast arrives in a separate VLAN. The new VM is now in the list. Select KONNECT-TV and right-click on 'Settings...'. Go to 'Security' on the left and uncheck 'Enable Secure Boot'. The Linux image will not start with Secure Boot enabled. Under 'Processor', set 'Number of virtual processors' to 8. Under 'Memory', check: 'RAM' 32768 MB, 'Enable Dynamic Memory' remains off. For the 'Network Adapter', the 'Virtual switch' TV-LAN is selected. If the TVs are in a tagged VLAN, enable 'Enable virtual LAN identification' and enter the VLAN ID of the TV network — here 20. Expand the adapter, open 'Advanced Features', and enable 'Enable MAC address spoofing'. The guards can remain enabled here — Konnect TV is not a DHCP server. The same can be done via PowerShell — practical if you are setting up multiple servers. Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan with -Access and the VLAN ID, then Set-VMNetworkAdapter with MAC spoofing enabled. On the physical switch port of the host: Trunk with the TV VLAN, IGMP snooping, and querier in this VLAN. Test the multicast first with VLC on a laptop in the same VLAN — before you suspect the server. Under 'Automatic Start Action', select 'Always start this virtual machine automatically'. After a host reboot, the TV system will start up again on its own. Click 'OK' to save all settings.
InstallationBoot from imageBoot and installationThe boot menu, the installer, and the first start. Use 'Connect…' to open the 'Virtual Machine Connection' console window. Click on 'Start'. Die VM startet vom Image. Im Boot-Menü ist „Install KONNECT+ TV OS“ vorausgewählt — bestätigen Sie mit Enter, oder warten Sie ein paar Sekunden. Bei Grafikproblemen nehmen Sie „safe graphics“. Der KONNECT+ TV OS Installer öffnet sich mit der Seite „Welcome“. Links sehen Sie die sechs Schritte: Welcome, Location, Keyboard, Partitions, Install und Finish. Die Sprache des Installers bleibt auf „American English“. Click 'Next' to continue. Seite „Location“: Prüfen Sie „Region“ und „Zone“ — die Zeitzone bestimmt die Programmzeiten im TV-Guide und die Uhr auf den Fernsehern. Dann „Next“. Seite „Keyboard“: Wählen Sie das Layout Ihrer Tastatur, zum Beispiel „English (US)“ oder „German“. Dann „Next“. 'Partitions' page: Select 'Erase disk'. The virtual hard drive is empty — the installer will create all partitions automatically. Under 'After', you see the result: a small EFI partition and the system on the rest of the hard drive. Click 'Install' to begin the installation. Seite „Install“: Das System wird kopiert — etwa zehn Minuten. Der Text darüber erklärt schon, was beim ersten Start passiert. Seite „Finish“: „All done.“ „Restart now“ bleibt angehakt — mit „Done“ startet die VM neu.
First loginSetup-Code und KonsoleThe first loginErsten Administrator anlegen, Hotel und Lizenz eintragen. Der Kiosk öffnet die Seite „Set up this installation“. This is what the 'DVD Drive' page looks like: set 'Media' to 'None' and confirm with 'OK'. This is the Konnect TV console. First steps: create a hotel, enter the license, connect channels and PMS — everything is explained in the dashboard presentation.
Network checklistBefore you go liveCheck multicast firstThese points prevent the most common support requests. Finally, the network checklist. Multicast is the part that causes the most issues — check it first. Multicast and switching: IGMP snooping in the TV VLAN with an IGMP querier — without a querier, channels will freeze every few minutes. The headend multicast reaches the server's VLAN. Gigabit from the headend to the server and from the server to the access switches. No client isolation between TVs and the server. Server and integrations: static IP, DNS, and NTP. The TVs reach the server on ports 80 and 443, the console only from the admin network. PMS reachable — Opera on-premise via port 1521 or IFC8, and OHIP for Opera Cloud. Internet access from the server for weather, flights, updates, and license. And supported TVs: Samsung Tizen, LG webOS Hospitality, or Android boxes. That was the installation of Konnect TV on Hyper-V. If you have any questions, our support team is here to help — you can find the contact details in your customer account.
